Garlic

Garlic - used as a cure-all for centuries. Garlic plays a part in one of Korea’s creation myths. A tiger and a bear prayed to Hwanung (the Supreme Divine Regent who taught his people about the arts, agriculture, & medicine) that they may become human. Upon hearing their prayers, Hwanung gave them 20 cloves of garlic and a bundle of mugwort, ordering them to eat only this sacred food and remain out of the sunlight for 100 days. The tiger gave up after about twenty days and left the cave. However, the bear remained and was transformed into a woman.  In time the woman became Hwanung’s wife & gave birth to a son called Dangun - meaning: "Altar Prince" & sandalwood.

“Garlic”  is made of 41 lovingly hand crafted individual pieces and measures approximately 10 x 12 inches unframed.  A range of glass was used including opaque, striated, and transparent.

Le Petite Transom de la Prairie

I am insanely excited to share this custom transom window that was completed and installed in record time! Thanks to the sweetest clients ever, I've had the opportunity to learn about these amazing glass tiles.

Incorporated in the 81 pieces that make up this 14 1/2 x 31 1/2 interior transom are Luxfer Prisms designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.  In 1895 FLW designed and patented 41 different designs.  Of the 41 designs, the “flower” pattern was the only pattern that was produced by Luxfer. Prism glass tiles - with the saw tooth pattern on the back side - were typically used in commercial storefront transom windows to light the interior rooms; reducing the need for artificial light at a time when electric lighting wasn’t widely available.

When originally created, the tiles were clear, but prolonged exposure to sunlight causes a reaction with the manganese oxide that was used in the manufacturing process, causing the glass to turn amethyst in color.  This window’s inspiration was drawn from the work of FLW and the Prairie School and the Arts and Crafts movement.  Featured in this transom are the Flower and Teardrop tiles.

Beet in Triplicate

“Beet in Triplicate” is made of 97 individual pieces and measures approximately 15 in x 21 inches.   It is made using the copper foil or “tiffany” technique.

A range of glass was used including opaque, transparent, semi-transparent, seed glass and wispy glass.  The gentle beet comes in the most inspiring colors! Bulls Blood (purple) tender and sweet from the 1840s; Crapaudine (candy stripe) - the oldest beet still grown dates back 1,000 years; and Golden (orange) has been grown since the 1820s.  According to Irish folklore, if beet juice is used to write a love letter, you will be found irresistible by the object of your affections!

Honey Bee

Honey Bee is made of 46 individual pieces and measures 9 x 11 inches and is finished with zinc came.

A range of glass was used including opaque, transparent, semi-transparent, artique, water glass, and deeply textured glass.

I found this sweet poem by Emily Dickinson which I think perfectly suits it:

"The Bee is Not Afraid of Me"

The Bee is not afraid of me,

I know the Butterfly -

The pretty people in the Woods

Receive me cordially -

The Brooks laugh louder

When I come -

The Breezes madder play;

Wherefore mine eye thy silver mists,

Wherefore, Oh Summer’s Day?
